Evidence is growing that something anomalous is happening deep within our oceans. And these anomalies just might be connected to some of the most talked-about UFO and drone sightings in history.
And yet, the topic of underwater UFOs rarely gets the top tier treatment in the media that it deserves.
The Verified Report spoke exclusively with award-winning investigative journalist Ross Coulthart about USOs (unidentified submersible objects) and NewsNation’s new documentary airing Saturday night, December 6: Reality Check with Ross Coulthart: Underwater UFOs.
To Coulthart, the underwater domain may hold the key to better understanding much of the UAP story. During our conversation, he shared why he believes the Catalina Island region in particular demands serious scientific scrutiny, a strange phenomenon involving underwater shadow creatures, and why the world’s militaries have quietly been tracking underwater anomalies for decades.
This is the first in a three-part series based on our in-depth discussion with Coulthart, whose previous reporting has helped bring high-level whistleblowers like David Grusch into public view. Part 2 will explore the mysterious drone incursions and the threat they pose to national security; and Part 3 will review what we know about the massive UFO hidden in a laudatory location.
Catalina Island is a Hotbed for Anomalous Electromagnetic Activity
When I asked Coulthart which part of Saturday’s special stood out to him, personally, the most, he didn’t hesitate.
“It’s the evidence that suggests that there is something anomalous under the ocean near Catalina Island.”
For years, pilots have reported that transponders and ADS-B signals drop out unexpectedly over that region. Coulthart said these disruptions aren’t rare one-off glitches. He’s been told that aircraft sometimes “lose their beacons that were displaying their call sign … to air traffic control, which of course is a huge problem in the approaches to the LA International Airport.”
“It’s pretty well known anecdotally by pilots that there is something anomalous that is affecting … aviation electrical equipment in the air over Catalina Island,” he continued.
To explore the issue more closely, his colleague Ben Hansen—an ex-FBI agent and UAP investigator—flew over the area in a light aircraft equipped with electromagnetic sensing instruments. Part of the documentary focuses on just what he found.
Here are two sneak peeks from the documentary, courtesy of NewsNation, about Catalina Island. In the first, boat captain Thor Laizans describes his UFO encounter while aboard his boat.
In this second sneak peek, oceanographer and retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet on an ocean canyon in the Santa Monica basin and the Catalina channel in California where numerous UAP have been sighted by naval ships. This sneak peek is provided courtesy of NewsNation.
The Ocean and Even the Great Lakes May Be Strategic Hiding Spots for Nonhuman Intelligence
If a nonhuman intelligence (NHI) were here, where would they hide?
Coulthart posits that the deepest parts of Earth’s oceans offer both strategic cover and proximity to areas of high military and technological value. More than 70% of the planet’s surface is ocean, and the vast majority of that remains unmapped.
“If you’re a nonhuman intelligence and you’re monitoring these primitive apes that are playing with nuclear weapons, then a good place to hide would be in the depths of the oceans,” Coulthart speculated. “And especially California where there is so much defense aerospace technology.”
Vandenberg Space Force Base, the Nevada Test Range, major aerospace facilities, and a dense cluster of classified defense operations are all near the California coast, for example.
Coincidentally (or not) this is also where some pretty famous sightings have been reported, such as the Nimitz UFO encounter (which David Fravor testified to Congress about) and the giant red UFO spotted at Vandenberg (which Ryan Graves testified to Congress about.)
And of course, the 2019 “splish splash” incident, captured on video, where an object is seen “hovering above the water” and then “either disappears instantaneously into the air or it drops down into the water…” Coulthart added. “Clearly they’re using some kind of advanced technology that we just don’t understand yet.”
Coulthart emphasized that similar patterns appear on the U.S. East Coast, where more anomalous sightings have been reported.
These reports, he said, go back decades and involve some of the most sophisticated sensors in the world.
While oceans get most of the attention, Coulthart said inland waters shouldn’t be overlooked.
“I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve spoken to people in the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force, Army who’ve witnessed anomalous objects in and around not only the ocean, but also areas of water, lakes, inland lakes,” Coulthart told us.
The Great Lakes region in particular has a long history of unexplained objects entering and exiting the water, he added.
These patterns likely point to something more than misidentified drones or atmospheric artifacts.
Submariners Describe High-Speed Underwater Craft & “Shadow Beings”
One of the most striking revelations from Coulthart’s recent investigations are reports of shadowy humanoid figures seen near nuclear facilities and submarines.
Coulthart recalled talking to a man on his Reality Check series, just a few weeks before our interview, who guards thermonuclear weapons near Las Vegas at an area very close to Area 51.
“He reported shadow beings. Basically, seeing humanoid shadowy beings that weren’t clearly defined humanoid shapes, but looked like shadows, basically, in in this nuclear weapons facility,” Coulthart said. “And when I started talking about that on my show, I was amazed because I’ve had about four or five calls, messages from people who have worked or are working in the submarine service who say that they’ve seen similar unusual anomalous phenomena on submarines deep underwater in our oceans. And these are all nuclear attack submarines. And all of them are basically telling me, the phenomena they regularly witness in the water is quite extraordinary.”
Some of the people who contacted him also reported seeing objects traveling underwater at massive speeds.
“Two of them have worked with sonar and other detection systems, and they say they’ve detected objects moving in excess of 1,000 knots underwater, which is an enormous speed,” he continued.
Such speeds defy known propulsion systems. Yet these objects seem to achieve these speeds effortlessly.
The reports match what other naval personnel have been saying for decades: reporting underwater objects that can do fast 90-degree turns and even evade sonar.
“It’s a genuine mystery, and it’s one that I think we’ve largely ignored journalistically because it’s underwater,” he said. “It’s out of sight.”
An Anomaly Found Beneath the Baltic Sea
Saturday’s documentary also explores a Baltic Sea anomaly, in an investigation led by Ocean X founder Dennis Åsberg. While Coulthart is careful not to spoil the documentary, he confirmed that crews have experienced unusual electromagnetic effects around the site.
“There’s clearly something anomalous going on down there that’s influencing … electromagnetically, the signals of the crews above,” he said. “I think it’s worthy of investigation. I think it should be taken seriously.”
Coulthart Extends Call for Witnesses and Data
Coulthart said he hopes the documentary encourages members of the public to come forward to him with leads or information about unidentified submerged objects that he can investigate.
“The only way we’re ever going to crack this walnut is not with any kind of an admission from the President or some government agency,” he said. “They’re gonna bury their heads in the sand on this as long as they possibly can. The only way we’re ever gonna expose what’s really going on is with good data-driven, evidence-driven analysis and investigation.”

Coming Soon: Coulthart’s Investigation Into Tridactyls
At the end of our conversation, Coulthart mentioned he had just returned from South America, where he has been investigating the controversial tridactyl beings. While he reserved details for a forthcoming report, he was unequivocal on one point: he does not believe they are hoaxes.
“I think they are something real,” he hinted. “The big question is — what are they?”
He said the public has been “willfully misled” by parts of the news media, and what we need now is rigorous, independent, peer-reviewed scientific analysis.
